Tampa, Florida Real Estate and History
In 1763 the bay, and ultimately the county, was named Hillsborough Bay after Lord Hillsborough; Secretary of State for the Colonies. Later the area transferred to Spain and then to the United States in 1821. Tampa became incorporated on January 1849 with around 200 civilians and just under 1000 military personnel stationed at Fort Brooke. Tampa Real EstateTampa's real estate history has been dominated by indians, the millitary, cigars, boating, airlines, and business; roughtly in that order. After some of the indigenous indians were tamed, development in the region grew after Henry B. Plant's 1884 railroad extension to the Hillsborough River. He then built lavish hotels along the rail line to attract visitors. The military has had an ongoing role in the area's development, especially thanks to MacDill Air Force base. Tampa became an important miliary asset to the Civil war, Spanish American War, World War II, as well as current world operations. The U.S. Operations Command is headquartered in South Tampa. Cigars have long since been linked to Tampa History. In 1886 Vincente Martinez Ybor established a cigar factory in Tampa. Ever since then the areas near Nebraska Avenue and Columbus drive, Ybor City, have enlivened the area's community. Right now the primative bungalows and housing that borders Ybor are prized by young professionals and hip city residents. Downtown Tampa and its businesses have experienced an incredible rate of growth since the 1960's. Major banks like SunTrust, Bank of American, and an increasing number of corporations have built glass and steel towers, shaping downtown. Tampa now has Baywalk, The Tampa Bay Aquarium, The Tampa Convention Center, and scenic walks to support more growth and business.
